Raising Awareness About Aphasia and Primary Progressive Aphasia
During Aphasia Awareness Month, we are helping raise awareness about Aphasia and Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) and the importance of programs that bring people together for support, conversation, education, and connection.
What is Aphasia?
Aphasia is a language impairment caused by a stroke or brain injury. Aphasia can impact the ability to read, write, speak or listen.
What is PPA?
Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a neurological condition that affects speech and language abilities. It is a type of Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD), a group of brain disorders characterized by degeneration in the frontal and/or temporal lobes.

Why Awareness Matters
Living with Aphasia or PPA can feel isolating — not only for the person diagnosed, but also for their loved ones. Awareness helps people recognize symptoms earlier, encourages understanding, and supports the development of communication-friendly communities and programs.
Support groups, conversation groups, educational programs, and social connections can make a meaningful difference.
During Aphasia Awareness Month, we encourage everyone to learn more, share information, and help create spaces where communication differences are met with patience, understanding, and support.
