A Community That Shows Up As we turn the page on another incredible June Aphasia Awareness Month, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude.
Together, our MnCAN community exceeded our fundraising goal, welcomed many first-time donors, and inspired countless new individuals to learn about aphasia and Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). Every conversation you started and every dollar you gave is helping someone living with aphasia find connection, confidence, and hope.
Awareness is about so much more than numbers. It's about changing lives. It's about helping a family feel less alone after a diagnosis. It's about creating communities where communication differences are met with understanding instead of frustration. It's about ensuring that every person living with aphasia knows they still have a voice—and a place to belong.
We are continually humbled by the generosity, compassion, and dedication of this community. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for believing in our mission. Thank you for standing beside individuals and families living with aphasia and PPA. Because of you, MnCAN continues to grow, reach more people, and remind our community that life after aphasia or PPA is still filled with friendship, purpose, and hope. With heartfelt gratitude, Jessica Wald & Angie Maier Co-Executive Directors Minnesota Connect Aphasia Now (MnCAN) |

| What is the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA)?
At MnCAN, we believe aphasia is more than a communication disorder—it affects a person's ability to participate in everyday life. That is why our programs are built on the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA), an internationally recognized philosophy that focuses on helping people reconnect with the activities, relationships, and experiences that matter most to them. Rather than asking, "How can we improve speech" LPAA asks, "What is important to this person, and how can we help them participate?" Whether it is enjoying time with family, volunteering, attending church, or meeting friends for coffee - communication is about connection and living a meaningful life. How does MnCAN use LPAA?
Every week, our conversation groups provide a supportive environment where people with aphasia or PPA can: - Practice real-life communication with others who understand aphasia
-
Build confidence and independence by listening to conversation and talking about the week or life events
- Develop friendships and reduce isolation
- Learn strategies or ideas to make communication easier
-
Support each other and celebrate strengths
We don't measure success by the number of words someone says—we measure it by the friendships formed, the confidence regained, and the meaningful moments shared.
Because life doesn't stop after aphasia—and neither should the opportunity to participate. |
