Hello MnCAN Community,

May is Stroke Awareness Month, please partner with us in spreading the word about signs and symptoms of stroke. According to a 2018 publication produced by Aphasia Access, the frequency of aphasia in stroke survivors ranges from 24-50 percent. You can read more about aphasia and share this link with others: Aphasia Education

May is also National Speech-Language and Hearing Month. Our dedicated speech-language pathologists (SLP's) bring so much passion and expertise to the important work of serving those living with aphasia.  We thank our entire team of SLP group facilitators and board members.

All of our best to you,

Angie Maier and Jessica Wald

We are excited to introduce a new way to help YOU connect to each other and our community: Coffee and Connections.

Our first Coffee and Connections was held on April 25 in Edina and 17 participants or care partners joined!

Our second Coffee and Connections was held on May 16 in Eagan and 12 participants or care partners joined!

We loved talking with you and helping you connect with each other!

Our second annual MnCAN Social Fundraising Event hosted by Back Channel Brewing in Spring Park was a fantastic evening of building connections. More than 50 people attended this social event on beautiful Lake Minnetonka. The weather was perfect and the conversation was inviting.

The months of April and May have been quite eventful for our community outreach. Please read about different opportunities we have had to share more about aphasia in our community!

1.  Minnesota Speech and Hearing Association Annual Conference. Our executive directors hosted a booth and provided a lecture titled "All About Aphasia" to the local speech-language pathology community during this hybrid event.

2. VA Stroke Awareness Fair. Our executive directors talked one-on-one with healthcare providers and people who may have been impacted by stroke or aphasia.

3. Holy Innocents Children's Hospital in Mbarara, Uganda. Our executive directors along with Dr. Ganesh Asaithambi, a stroke neurologist from Allina Health and MnCAN board member, shared virtually about aphasia and supportive conversation to a group of medical providers.

We know when people understand aphasia, everyone communicates better.

Do you know a group that would benefit from education and/or increased awareness about aphasia?

We would love to connect. Email us at contact@mncan.org

  • The MnCAN 8-week Summer Session will start in June. Check your email for payment invoices.
  • Are you someone with aphasia and love music and/or singing? MnCAN is looking for participants interested in joining a MnCAN Aphasia Choir.  If interested email us at contact@mncan.org.
  • Are you age 55 or younger and living with aphasia?  If so, we invite you to respond to a short survey. We have ideas for something NEW and want to hear from YOU. Click here for a short survey

MnCAN has strong relationships with other aphasia organizations, this includes sharing information on behalf of our aphasia partners. The National Aphasia Association has created a survey is intended to find out how someone uses — or might want to use — artificial intelligence (AI) after being diagnosed with aphasia.   https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/sv/FZ9Bovk
