We are honoring and celebrating the following in May: 1. National Stroke Awareness Month
2. National Speech-Language Hearing Month 3. Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month |

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Many of our participants experience aphasia following a stroke. Please share the BE FAST information with friends and family. We want to celebrate our stroke survivors this month and educate our community. Life with aphasia can feel isolating and challenging but our participants continue to join aphasia programs to stay connected and build new communities with people who understand life with aphasia.

Sheen Chiou, Ph.D., CCC-SLP joined MnCAN in 2014 and comments that her aphasia conversation group has always been a highlight of her week. She is also a professor and department chair in the Department of Speech, Hearing, and Rehabilitation Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
As co-president of Asian Pacific Islander Speech-Language-Hearing Caucus, she is so proud to share that the caucus has not only expanded its membership but has also cultivated an inclusive and supportive community and offers a variety of programs for members. Sheen is also slated as a prospective board member in speech-language pathology on the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Board of Directors.
Please check out the caucus to learn more at https://apislhc.org/.
We are grateful for her dedication to the speech-language pathology field and MnCAN! |

Sara Nuahn, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, has joined the team as co-facilitator of our Care Partner Support group. Her role with MnCAN is to help support our participants and families by providing skills related to coping, resilience, relationship dynamics and other areas of mental well being that aphasia can impact. Sara's expertise in working with stroke and brain injury survivors, as well as those with other neurological conditions within the scope of mental health and resource service, adds another beneficial support system to our MnCAN community.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Stroke survivors with aphasia have a higher incidence of depression and anxiety than stroke survivors without aphasia. MnCAN invited Sara to our team to help talk about some of these concerns.
The MnCAN Care Partner Support Group meets the second Thursday of the month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Zoom. For more information visit https://mncan.org/care-partner-support-group/ |

| Two-thirds of adults with hearing, speech, and/or language difficulties say their daily interactions with people outside of their family and friends are affected by their communication difficulties. Aphasia may affect the ability to communicate effectively. Communication is involved in almost every aspect of daily life (ordering food, listening to the news or radio, talking on the phone to friends or family, writing an email, reading the mail, managing finances).

| Join MnCAN for a month of aphasia education and awareness PLUS an opportunity to GIVE to the MnCAN June Aphasia Awareness Fundraising Campaign. Aphasia can be from a stroke or brain injury OR primary progressive aphasia. Research indicates that only 9% of the general population knows about aphasia. This month represents an opportunity to educate your family and friends about aphasia. |

How YOU can help: -
Share our education and fundraising page (will be sent on June 1) with your friends, family and communities.
- Start telling people now about aphasia. Think about sharing your aphasia story, what communication strategies help you best in conversation, or how aphasia makes you feel.
-
Join our friendly competition—the aphasia group that raises the most money will earn a pizza party (or other meal of choice) for your group.
Our goal for June is to raise $10,000 and we want YOU to be part of our friendly competition. More information to come on June 1! |
