We know aphasia affects family & friends too. The group is facilitated by a Speech-Language Pathologist. No registration is required.

MnCAN uses the terminology care partner rather than the more traditionally used term care giver because we believe it is a partnership with friends and family. The partnership supports the road to living successfully with aphasia.

MnCAN was thrilled to share more about the life participation approach to aphasia and supportive conversation approach to aphasia at the Minnesota Statewide Stroke Conference in November. The VA Medical Center also shared about making more aphasia friendly materials in the medical setting.

Thank you Minnesota Stroke Association for the opportunity to share more about living successfully with aphasia. It was an honor and joy.

According to the National Aphasia Association, 84.5% of people have never heard the term “Aphasia.”

Participant Update

Joel Mikres, a beloved MnCAN participant, passed away surrounded by family on November 21, 2023.

Joel was an active participant in MnCAN for many years in multiple groups, creating friendships and laughter wherever he went. At the last group he attended, he said, "Well, I'm just glad to be here."

Joel, we are so glad you found MnCAN...you truly made an impact on everyone you met.

He will surely be missed with his witty sense of humor, the best (and hilarious) stories, and the friendly and comforting presence of "the man."

Joel's family shared the following words regarding his MnCAN experience:

"Dad just loved his group and he made sure to let me know at the end of each session that he wanted to sign up again. I’m sure that by now you know how isolating life with aphasia can be, but having his MnCAN fellowship made things better. MnCAN was such a bright spot after his stroke. MnCAN was the place my dad found acceptance and understanding. He was a great and easy conversationalist before his stroke. He was the life of every party. MnCAN helped him understand his aphasia and the frustrating limitations it put on him. More importantly, MnCAN also taught his family how to accommodate his new needs."
